The great crested grebe was easier to get today. Although the bird spent most of the time under water, it was closer than usual when it surfaced.

Swans and cygnets
Now I know what baby swans are called. I had to check. Cygnets. The word is diminutive of Old French ‘cigne’ which means ‘swan’. It comes from Latin ‘cycnus’ and from Greek ‘kyknos’. Who knew that looking at birds could end up in an etymology lesson? And furthermore, how could anyone call a cygnet an ugly duckling? They’re are the cutest, softest looking things I have ever seen.

Mottled Beauty

I think I found an Alcis Repandata, a Mottled Beauty. Or rather, I think it found me.

Summer day

The polar night
The polar night is coming to an end, and the sun is finally reaching up above the horizon. Just barely, but still powerful. To see the sunlight, we had to walk up to a height. Today is the first day I have actually seen the sun for a week. The pinkish, smudged, red ball hovering over the blue fjord, took my breath away. I wasn’t the only one to stop and try to capture the beauty. These pictures are taken during the last few days in Kirkenes, Norway. All the pictures are taken midday, and this is as light as it gets. The final pictures is from Gardermoen, near Oslo.
